Course Details: Fundamentals

Across four interactive 90-minute sessions, the Leadership for the Modern Age Fundamentals Course provides you with foundational knowledge and tools to effectively create a collaborative environment that leverages diversity of experience and thought. Each session builds upon the previous one.

The Leadership for the Modern Age Program is structured into three courses—Fundamentals, Advanced, and Extended—with each course building on the one before it.

Session detail

Session 1: Psychological Safety

This session explores the fundamental role of psychological safety in building effective and thriving teams, highlighting its significance for inclusion, collaboration, and learning. Participants will learn why psychological safety is vital for fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and how to unlock the potential of diverse teams.

The session begins with an overview of the concept’s history, what it means and the research supporting its significance. Case studies will offer insights into how organisations have successfully implemented psychological safety, as well as the negative consequences of neglecting it.

Participants will discover practical strategies for fostering psychological safety, enabling their teams to enter the learning zone of high performance and quality work.

Interactive exercises will allow participants to reflect on their own experience and actions they want to take while learning from each other.

Additionally, participants will be introduced to tools that help evaluate their current practices and assess their teams' stages in the safety progression to identify areas for improvement. To support ongoing growth, a curated list of resources will be provided.

Session 2: Growth Mindset

In this session, participants will delve into the concept of growth and fixed mindsets. The session will explore why a growth mindset is critical to enable an adaptive and innovative workplace. The session will draw on research, including that of neuroplasticity to show how a growth mindset can drive personal and team development. Participants will also gain insights from various companies on how to adopt a growth mindset culture.

The session will cover practical approaches to facilitate both individual and team growth, empowering leaders with techniques to foster growth mindset in their teams. It will also examine how language can encourage or discourage a growth mindset and provide tips for using language effectively. Participants will explore leadership behaviours and strategies for cultivating a culture of continuous learning and inclusion. They will also learn to apply techniques designed to enhance resilience within diverse teams.

Participants will have time in the session to reflect on their own experiences, identify fixed mindset triggers and actions they want to take going forward as well as share their insights with each other. Further study material will be provided to support ongoing growth.

Session 3: Coaching & Feedback techniques

In this session, participants will learn why coaching and feedback is essential to effective and inclusive leadership. They will be introduced to diverse coaching and feedback models along with techniques that enable equitable personal and team development as well faster and better decision making and results.

Attendees will gain valuable insights on how to recognise and address biases as well as how to deliver culturally aware feedback that’s key to creating a fair and inclusive environment.

This session explores how curiosity enhances relationships, collaboration, wellbeing and empathy - essential elements for adopting a coaching mindset that fosters motivation, self-reflection and action.

Participants will get the opportunity to practise asking quality questions and listening to learn. They will learn how to facilitate meaningful coaching conversations that encourage individuals to step out of their comfort zone and into the growth zone using the ASK model.

The session equips attendees with self-reflection tools to uncover blind spots and gain a deeper understanding of their team members. This will help them identify why feedback may be withheld and what challenges their team members face. Additional study material will be provided to support ongoing growth.

Session 4: Empowering Teams: Outcome Focused Leadership

This session provides attendees with the skills to help them move their teams from doing to thinking. It dives into why outcomes focused leadership is crucial to deliver faster, more equitable and better outcomes. Based on systems thinking, the session explores why distributed leadership is imperative to enable organisations to adapt quickly. Attendees will be introduced to models that facilitate effective decision-making at the level where the information resides.

The sessions offer organisational insights and lessons from Scandinavia on how companies have successfully implemented self-management and the role of leadership in this context. Participants will have the opportunity to identify and discuss leadership behaviours that foster a culture of continuous learning and empower teams to achieve outcomes aligned with organisational goals.

Participants will learn to apply an Outcome-Focused Framework to communicate desired outcomes, provide context, and establish guardrails and guiding principles. The session explores the relationship between autonomy, clarity, and competence, teaching attendees how to assess the appropriate distribution of control and choose the right language for different contexts.

Additionally, participants will discover how to create equitable opportunities for all team members to showcase their abilities. They will learn about Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) - a goal-setting framework that establishes clear and measurable goals. Additional study material will be provided to support ongoing growth.
